Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) is one of the ingredients we need to be concerned about in our products because it is a cheap, harsh chemical used in many lotions and shampoos. While it helps create the fun bubbles and lather of shampoos, it’s harsh chemicals can penetrate the hair follicles and irritate skin. Its job is to remove dirt and oils however it will also remove skin oils and dry your skin and scalp. In fact, it uses the same degreasing qualities that is in your car wash or to degrease car engines. Over 10,000 studies mention SLS toxicity and carcinogenic properties in cosmetics, skin care and hair products.
SLS is in toothpastes, hair color, bleaching agents, makeup foundation, hand soaps, shampoos… so many products. Think about this, how much toothpaste do you swallow, eye makeup can get in your eyes, lipstick can be licked off and swallowed. All of this can lead to ingestion of SLS and increased toxicity.
Autoimmune diseases such as MS, fibromyalgia, thyroid issues can be related to prolonged exposure to these chemicals as well. SLS has also been shown to increase certain hormone productions that are linked to cancers and other diseases. All this toxicity is due to exposure from personal care products.
Better Safer Smarter can recommend a better alternative for all our personal products. Sodium Laurel Sulfoacetate (SLSA) is the safer substitute ingredient that we recommend for shampoos, lotions and makeup. It is deemed safe by many sources including the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit independent company that examines the safety of products. It is naturally derived from palm and coconut oils. It is a milder cleanser than SLS and safe for nearly all skin types. Doesn’t irritate skin or dry hair as it does not penetrate the hair follicle. Still produces lather without the chemicals and it rinses easier while still taking out dirt and oils from hair. No evidence of liver toxicity or carcinogenic properties. Although Sodium Laurel Sulfoacetate sounds close to Sodium Laurel Sulfate, don’t be fooled as the products we recommend are scientifically tested to be better, safer alternatives!
