Vitamin D is essential for many aspects of health. Vitamin D receptors are found in the intestines, bone, kidneys, pancreas, muscle, and immune cells. Adequate Vitamin D is critical for many endocrine processes to perform optimally. In fact, many physicians refer to Vitamin D as “Hormone D” because of the vast effects on the body.
Vitamin D insufficiency is common, approximately 80 % of people have insufficient stores of Vitamin D. There is some controversy as to what level is appropriate. Vitamin D level is commonly measured with a blood test called 25-hydroxyvitamin D.
Most labs report levels greater than 30nanograms/milliliter as adequate. However, holistic and functional medicine doctors believe that anyone with less than 50nanograms/milliliter is insufficient. Levels greater than 125 ng/ml are considered excessive.
There are three sources of vitamin D; sun exposure, food and supplements. Vitamin D is present in only a few food sources, including seafood such as salmon and cod liver oil. Sunscreen may block the ability of the body to convert Vitamin D to it’s active form. Supplementation ensures consistent intake despite diet and sun exposure.
Low Vitamin D is linked to:
Muscle pain and muscle weakness
Bone weakness and bone pain
Depression and other mood disorders
Link with Multiple Sclerosis and other serious health issues
As part of an over all healthy lifestyle, have your Vitamin D level assessed and use high quality supplements to meet your body’s needs.
